The House has PASSED the bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare. Here’s all the details:

  • The bill will still have to go through the Senate - there are some debates whether or not it will pass. This legislation is extremely unpopular and some of the most vulnerable republicans are in the Senate. There are also Senate Republicans who are still leaning on a “no” side due to the changes this bill will make regarding Medicaid and pre-existing conditions. (source)

  • The bill was narrowly passed. 217 republicans voted to repeal and replace Obamacare, the party needed 216 to pass this. Here are the 20 republicans who voted against the bill.

  • The version of this bill was voted on WITHOUT a CBO score estimating the costs and how many will lose coverage. Republicans shrugged off complaints saying that the previous score was good enough despite there being major revisions. “We already had the Congressional Budget score when we did the main bill. These are amendments that only perfected, do not add costs,” said Rep. David McKinley. (source)

  • The bill WILL allow children to stay on their parent’s coverage until they are 26 years old, keeping that mandate from the ACA.

  • The individual mandate will be immediately removed, meaning there will be no tax on those who don’t purchase health care.

  • However, the Medicaid expansion will be phased out. The coverage expansion will stay in place until 2019 but no new eligible people will be added after that. Those on Medicaid often cycle in and out of the program due to their employment and income situation, meaning that this will lead to a significant drop in coverage because they won’t be able to re-enroll.

  • Medicaid will also see general cuts and changes. It will change how the federal government reimburses states, states may add work requirements that will further limit access to the programs, and the new option of a “block grant,” will be offered to the states. The block grant will ease limitations on states’ ability to kick people off, charge premiums, and cut benefits for children.

  • States will be allowed to opt out of provisions that required insurance companies to cover “essential health benefits” and charge everyone the same regardless of their health history.

  • Those buying insurance on their own will get tax credits based off their age now, rather than their income. Tax credits will increase as recipients get older, and phase them out for individuals making more than $75,000 or families making more than $150,000. (source)

  • Interestingly enough, the republicans made sure to include a loophole in the bill that exempts members of Congress from the losing provisions currently protected by Obamacare. They are now saying that they will eventually close that loophole but this will come in separate legislation and not offered as part of the American Health Care Act. Fucking cute. (source)

  • The bill will cut taxes for the wealthy. Under the ACA wealthy Americans saw tax increases to pay for it’s coverage expansion, the AHCA will get rid of those taxes. These tax cuts for the wealthy add up to $883 billion.

  • Ultimately the winners of the passing will be people who are younger, healthier, and high income, while the losers are those who are older, sicker, and low-income. (source)

  • Many republicans voted on this without even reading the bill. Amendments were made last night, giving them almost no time to read exactly what the bill will do. Rep. Thomas Garrett even told the news “"I don’t think any individual has read the whole bill, that’s why we have staff.” (source)

See, shit like this is why I don’t have any fucking time for people telling leftists to be less violent, because the poor, and in this case especially disabled poor people, are being constantly murdered by the US government.  We’re already dying.

Mom declares her daughter is done with homework in viral email.

Blogger Bunmi Laditan sent her 10-year-old’s school a clear message.

“Hello Maya’s teachers,

Maya will be drastically reducing the amount of homework she does this year. She’s been very stressed and is starting to have physical symptoms such as chest pain and waking up at 4 a.m. worrying about her school workload.

She’s not behind academically and very much enjoys school. We consulted with a tutor and a therapist suggested we lighten her workload. Doing 2-3 hours of homework after getting home at 4:30 is leaving little time for her to just be a child and enjoy family time and we’d like to avoid her sinking into a depression over this.”

A++++ parenting 💜

I’ve talked with a whole cadre of child therapists and psychiatrists about this very issue. There is little conclusive evidence that homework significantly improves elementary school children’s grades, understanding of subjects, or facility with various operations, processes, etc. However, plenty of evidence suggests that ever-increasing amounts of homework for young children lead to stress, anxiety, emotional fatigue, resistance toward academics in general, lack of leisure time to build social/interpersonal skills, and poorer family relations.  (My kids were doing about 3 hours a week IN KINDERGARTEN, at age 5 – so that’s ½ hour every night, after a 6.5 hour school day, or else saving it up for long slogs over the weekend, even more disruptive. And that wasn’t including reading practice!)

We have stopped doing homework altogether with my 7 year old as a result of severe anxiety/depression and a learning disability. She had gotten to a place where she had so little self confidence and truly believed that she was stupid and worthless, not just because of homework of course – but every time we tried to sit down to do homework with her, it’d end in tears with her really vehemently berating herself, and no amount of encouragement could ameliorate the damage done. Now, granted, she’s got other things going on besides just an overload of school work. But in NO WAY did the homework help her, either academically or emotionally.

No little kid should have to spend an hour or more each night getting through homework. Now, my deal with Siena is that if she wants to give her homework a shot, I will absolutely help her if she wishes for help, but I no longer force her to complete all of it or to work on it for some set length of time before finally throwing in the towel.

Guess what? With the pressure taken off, she’s actually doing MORE independent work now, purely out of the desire to learn and practice, than she ever was before we’d decided with her therapy team and school that homework was just not a thing this kid could handle.

Luckily for my older daughter my school’s 3rd-grade team decided to hand out homework only 3x/week, and the sheets take no more than 15-20 minutes to complete. That is totally reasonable for 8-9 year olds!

Anyway tl;dr just because the school system may require it sure as shit doesn’t mean parents can’t, or shouldn’t, fight it. Do what’s right for your kid, and above all, let them be kids.

A lot of pets will ignore you, but only a cat will follow you from room to room and check your lines of vision to make absolutely certain that you can see them ignoring you.

image

theyre not ignoring you! this is actually just a cats way of saying they want to keep you company without infringing on your personal space. its the equivalent of going to a friends house while you both separately scroll through tumblr, even though youre glad to be together.
alternatively the cat could be curious about what you are doing, but shy to make its presence known. either way the cat is paying very close attention to you!

this made me feel better

😺

I don’t understand why cats will have everything they do demonized no matter how innocent it is

It’s because they are hypersensitive introverts, and humans are mostly social extroverts.

Hypersensitive, introverted humans are often mistaken for antisocial, and as a species, we are myopic and anthropomorphize EVERYTHING.

Semi-social animals are not naturally intuitive to humans.

Dog packs very closely mirror a nuclear human family, made up of a mother and father and their pups, who leave to find their own mates and start their own packs as they mature beyond young adult hood.

Pigeon flocks are like a villiage comprized of one big, extended family, where children mostly stay close and new birds marry in.

Cats don’t work that way. There is no firmly set social structure for more social domestic cats to fall back on. None of the species they are thought to come from are naturally social. They mate, have kittens, and those families disperse to the four winds as soon as the young become self sufficient.

We have selected for higher tolerance to crowding and confinement, but that does not a social structure make.

A group of cats is more like random collage dorm or house mates. Whether or not they get along and how many the group can support long term depends on how well their individual personalities mesh, regardless of blood relation.

Kittens are more out going and have more energy than adult cats, but as they age, being playful and taking the risk of being friendly takes more energy than they have, so they go from being willing to play with every one to prefering the company of favorite familiar entities that have taken the time to learn about that individuals needs and preferences.

Humans, who naturally form close knit pack bonds, are generally out going, and do their very damnedest to form life long bonds of friendship see a cat’s intense curiosity and wary shyness of approach as stalkerish, and its need for quiet solitude when overstimulated (coupled with just *how* fast they become overstimulated) as fickleness, and are completely heartbroken when a friendly, out going kitten grows into a relatively shy, reserved cat.

With no effort to understand, what the average human sees is a sly, untrustwothy animal that is friendly one second, and warninglessly aggressive the next, not because there actually was no warning, but because feline body language is very subtle.

Once again, due to a cat’s sensitivity.

To a cat, humans are VERY loud, over the top dramatic, and socially dense as a fucking brick.

They have to scream EVERYTHING to get across to most of us, and that shit is exhausting.

The fact that they do make that stressful and exhausting effort proves that the ones who like us actually love us VERY much!
Just not in a way that big, loud, oblivious drama queens easily pick up on.

I will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, reblog this every time it comes up on my blog. This is the BEST statement, I’ve ever seen.

I really love this. So many are dead-set on the view that people cannot better themselves but that simply isn’t true. Everybody deserves a second chance and everybody has the ability to better themselves.

the idea that erika moen fetishises trans men and their “transformation from women into men” (yes she actually said it that way) makes me feel so dysphoric and uncomfortable it’s not funny. she needs to stay way the FUCK away from me and the trans community.

the fact that she is only attracted to women with vaginas and TRANS MEN speaks volumes about how she really feels about trans people.

she doesn’t support us, we’re just her fucking kink.
